Planning a trip Brisbane and want a perfect-weather trip? Our guide covers all you need to know about Brisbane’s climate, including average temperatures, humidity, and rainfall to help you pick the best time to visit.

A city famous for its vibrant urban culture, stunning riverside cityscape, Brisbane is also a beloved Queensland holiday destination thanks to its year-round beautiful weather.

With warm weather throughout the seasons, there’s never a bad time to visit the sparkling River City but understanding Brisbane’s climate can help to plan your trip around the weather you prefer.

Brisbane has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) and is known for its hot, humid, and rainy summers; mild, pleasant winters; and abundant sunshine throughout the year. Most consider the best time to visit Brisbane for ideal weather is during the city’s shoulder seasons, from March to May (autumn) and October.

But there are benefits and drawbacks of travelling to Brisbane at other times during the year. Our Brisbane climate and weather guide will break down the city’s average temperatures, rainfall, humidity and more by season and month. So, let’s dive in!

Brisbane’s weather and climate

According to the Köppen climate classification, Brisbane has a humid subtropical climate characterised by warm to hot, muggy, and wet summers along with comfortable winters. This makes the city of Brisbane one of the best places for sunseekers, outdoor adventurers and nature lovers as the temperature remains warm all year round. No matter when you choose to visit, it’s generally never cooler than 11°C, and it’s common to experience temperatures higher than 30°C during summer.

Another important aspect of Brisbane’s climate is that it can experience heavy rains, and strong winds from tropical storms or cyclones that occur along the coast or inland. Queensland’s cyclone season is from the beginning of November to the end of April, which is when Brisbane is more likely to experience intense rain and winds. Direct cyclones in the city itself are quite rare.

As you prepare for your trip to Brisbane, it’s helpful to know about Brisbane’s climate, what weather to expect by season, and even monthly average temperatures and rainfall. After all, knowing what weather to expect will help you prepare and pack for a comfortable and enjoyable holiday. Let’s look at Brisbane’s climate by season and then by month, so you can decide on the best time to visit based on your weather preferences.

Summer in Brisbane is hot, humid and wet, with average daily temperatures typically ranging from 20°C to 30°C. For those travelling to Brisbane during summer, be prepared for occasional heatwaves that could reach up to 40°C. Brisbane’s summer is the most humid time of the year, with January and February being the peak months for mugginess. Most days, average humidity sits between 71% and 75%, but fortunately, even the hottest and most humid days are tempered by afternoon sea breeze.

Summer also brings the highest rainfall of the year, with total precipitation averaging between 360mm and 427mm over the season. February is particularly wet, so be prepared if you’re visiting at that time. Thunderstorms are common in summer and may be accompanied by hail or strong winds, so don’t forget your rain gear.

One of the best things to do in Brisbane in summer is to cool off at Streets Beach in South Bank in the city or venture to one of the nearby beaches along the coast. For those feeling adventurous and have the time, escape to one of the several budget-friendly islands nearby Brisbane for a few days.

What to pack:

  • Swimwear: The beaches may be crowded depending on when you plan your visit, but with the weather as gorgeous as it is, a beach day is a must during a summer holiday in Brisbane!
  • Sun protection and lightweight clothing: Brisbane’s climate makes it an ideal destination for outdoor activities, but that also means packing proper sun protection. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and some sunglasses. We also recommend light clothing in breathable materials, like linen or cotton.
  • A small umbrella: Summer is Brisbane’s rainiest time of year, be sure to pack a small umbrella so you stay dry while you explore the riverfront, the city, and all the top attractions.

Autumn in Brisbane is pleasant, warm, and slightly rainy, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 12°C to 29°C. In March, expect hot, humid days that feel like summer, but by May, the weather cools, with some nights dipping to around 10°C, so you may want to bring a light jacket just in case.

The chance of rain decreases in autumn, with March typically experiencing the highest likelihood of rainfall. While rainfall tapers off, it's important to note that Queensland’s cyclone season officially finishes at the end of April, so it’s important to check forecasts for thunderstorms ahead of your trip.

With warm weather and less chance of rain, autumn is one of the best times to explore Brisbane’s outdoor attractions like the City Botanical Gardens and cultural sites, like the Nepalese Pagoda in South Bank. From exploring Queen Street Mall to visiting the Howard Smith Wharves, there are plenty of things to do for first-timers in Brisbane that are perfect to take advantage of during this pleasant season.

What to pack:

  • Comfortable footwear: A comfy pair of walking shoes is essential for seeing all the city’s top destinations. Whether you’re exploring the hinterland or the CBD, you’ll thank yourself later!
  • Light jacket: Late autumn gets cooler in Brisbane, especially in the evenings. Whether enjoying the views on a river cruise or out at a rooftop bar, it's a good idea have a light jacket to stay warm on the cooler nights.
