Summer in Perth (December to February)

Summer in Perth is the hottest and driest time of the year, with average temperatures ranging from 17°C to 31°C. There are occasional heatwaves that cause scorching hot days as high as 45°C, so your visit may be best spent cooling off along the beach or visiting some of Perth’s indoor attractions. Fortunately, there is some welcome relief from the heat for those visiting Perth in summer in the form of the Fremantle Doctor, a cooling sea breeze that comes in from the Indian Ocean most afternoons. 

Rainfall is typically low in the summer months, with only a few rainy days per month. February is the rainiest during the summer season, with around 28mm of rain.

Autumn in Perth (March to May)

Autumn in Perth is characterised by warm days and cooler nights with moderate humidity. If you travel to the city this time of year, expect average temperatures between 10°C and 29°C, with early autumn experiencing hot days with temperatures potentially exceeding 30°C, cooling down later in the season. Humidity ranges from 44% to 72%, with low humidity increasing as the season progresses. Fortunately, early autumn has less rain but gradually increases into May, with an average of 113mm of rainfall, so don’t forget your rain gear!

As one of the best times to visit the city for comfortable weather, autumn is a fantastic time to plan for some outdoor adventures on the West Coast, such as a hike in Kings Park and Botanic Gardens. There are also plenty of family-friendly activities in Perth, such as visiting Yanchep National Park that are best done in autumn when the crowds are fewer and the weather is spectacular. Winter in Perth (June to August)

Spring in Perth (September to November)

Spring in Perth offers plenty of mild, sunny days with occasional showers, as well as average temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. Early spring typically has cooler mornings and evenings, with warm daytime temperatures, but it’s not uncommon for November days to experience highs above 25°C or even beyond 30°C. As the Noongar people rely on natural events around them to dictate when a season ends or starts, there is no set length of time for each season. Here’s a brief look at each of the six seasons, their rough timings, and the kind of weather you’ll experience during each time of year. 

Birak (December – January)

Birak, known as the “season of the young,” occurs from December to January and is characterised by dry and hot weather but cooler afternoons due to the Freemantle Doctor sea breeze that comes in from the southwest. This is a time for controlled burning of the undergrowth to promote new life.

Bunuru (February – March)

Bunuru, the “season of adolescence”, takes place from February to March and is the hottest time of the year in Perth. As the weather is hot and there is little to no rain, it’s a great time for coastal activities and excursions. This is a time when freshwater sources are often at their lowest due to minimal rainfall, so people traditionally move closer to rivers and coasts.

Djeran (April – May)

Dieran is known as the “season of adulthood” and lasts from April to May. Typically the nights are cooler, and the day temperatures are milder, signalling the transition from autumn to winter. This period sees the blooming of red flowers like the banksia, and weather patterns bring lighter winds, making it a calmer time of year.

Makuru (June – July)

Makuru, the “fertility season” occurs roughly from June to July and is the coldest and wettest time of the year, with heavy rainfall. Perth in January brings peak summer weather with dry, hot days and occasional heatwaves. Temperatures range from 18.8°C to 30.3°C, with some days reaching as high as 41°C. Fortunately, with relatively low humidity between 42% %, it is not too muggy. The Fremantle Doctor sea breeze also brings some relief from the heat in the afternoons.

Humidity does increase this month to an average of 48% to 63% due to increased rainfall. With 41.4mm of rainfall on average and six to seven days of rain on average, rain gear is a must this month. While the sea temperature averages 22.5°C, beach outings may feel less appealing as the weather cools. However, Perth’s parks and gardens are especially vibrant in April, making it a great time for outdoor explorations.
