Those coming by public transit will want to get off at Elizabeth Quay train station, at the Elizabeth Quay ferry station, or along St Georges Terrace, then walk to the quay.  

 

4. Fremantle Prison

Fremantle Prison is a UNESCO World Heritage site located 30 minutes outside of Perth’s CBD that history lovers and thrill-seekers will adore, especially if you’re looking for things to do in Perth at night. Here, you’ll get a glimpse into Perth’s unique history, walking through the former penitentiary that housed convicts up until 1991. Over the course of its history, the building housed thousands upon thousands of prisoners before being turned into a museum to educate the public. It’s one of the world's largest surviving prisons today, and many tours are available. The Convict Prison Tour is a short tour that explores the history of the place, while others, like the True Crime Tour, give visitors over 10 years of age insight into some of the most notorious criminals who lived there. Those looking for a unique experience will want to book the Tunnels Tour, which gives you a look at the tunnels built by the prisoners over the years. Plan at least two to three hours to take a tour, explore, and learn about the site. Be sure to wear some comfortable shoes, and if you’re doing the Tunnels Tour, be prepared for ample exercise. 

How to get there: Getting to Fremantle Prison takes about an hour by public transit and under 30 minutes by car or taxi. If you’re heading here by car, take State Route 2 and State Route 7, 6, or 5 and follow signs for Fremantle Prison. Parking is not free, so bring cash. 5. The Perth Mint

6. WA Museum Boola Bardip

WA Museum Boola Bardip, located in the Perth Cultural Centre, is one of the best Perth attractions for families, students, and history lovers. Celebrating the diverse history, culture, and science of Western Australia, you’ll walk through magnificent exhibits on Aboriginal history and the state’s natural history. From permanent exhibits like WA Treasures to special exhibits that are on display only for a short time, there is plenty to explore, especially for those visiting Perth for the first time. If you aren’t sure what to explore first, a Highlights Tour is always a great idea and is available daily. There are also other tours, like the Boola Bardip Aboriginal Tour or the Family Tour, which is perfect for those travelling with kids. 7. Optus Stadium

Situated along the Swan River just east of Perth CBD, Optus Stadium is a must-see attraction for those who love sports and concerts, but it’s also an incredible spot to visit for the city views!  This world-class stadium hosts many of the most prestigious sporting events and music events in the area, but you don’t have to book tickets to see your favourite band or team play just to see the stadium in person. Optus Stadium offers tours, including a HALO Rooftop Tour, so you’ll experience what it is like behind the scenes. You’ll walk through some areas that only the world’s most famous bands and athletes have ever seen. You’ll also get to see some incredible views of the Swan River and the Perth Skyline to the west. Allow at least two hours for tours and try to come here by public transport, as parking is difficult to find if a concert or game is on. 

How to get there: Public transit is the easiest way to reach Optus Stadium. You’ll want to get off at Perth Stadium train station or Perth Stadium bus stop and walk over. 

 

8. Cottesloe Beach

Cottesloe Beach is one of the prettiest beaches in Perth, with soft white sand, crystal-clear water, and iconic sunsets for an idyllic day along the coastline close to the CBD. Those who love snorkelling, surfing, swimming, and relaxing on the beach will want to plan some time during their holiday to explore this pristine beach. It’s one of the best places to unwind and one of the top 5 family fun activities in Perth. Free public showers, change rooms, and toilets are available, as well as an abundance of grassy areas for picnics and shady trees to get out of the sun when needed. If you get hungry, you’ll have your choice of enjoying a packed picnic or snagging a snack from one of the many cafes and restaurants across the beach, like Longview Cottesloe or Magic Apple Wholefoods. How to get there: Public transit is the best way to get to Cottesloe, as parking is difficult to find. Take the bus and get off at any of the stops along the beach on Marine Parade. Alternatively, take the train to Cottesloe station and grab a taxi or bus to get to the coast. 

 

9. Art Gallery of Western Australia

Located just minutes from Perth Town Hall at Perth Cultural Centre, the Art Gallery of Western Australia houses classic and contemporary masterpieces you’ll want to explore. Here, you’ll find a range of free exhibits from both notable regional and international artists, as well as several special exhibits that rotate each and every year. If you’re unsure what to see, there are guided tours for free every Wednesday and Sunday at 11am that will show you the museum's highlights. There’s also the AGWA Rooftop Bar open from 4pm till late Fridays and Saturdays, providing you with a great way to unwind after traversing Perth Cultural Centre and the art gallery. Not to mention, it’s also a great place to go and see some beautiful views of Perth CBD. Plan at least an hour or two here and see some of the other attractions at Perth Cultural Centre, too. 

How to get there: Located in the heart of Perth CBD, take a car or taxi to Perth train station and walk to the cultural centre. If driving, park at CPP Citiplace and bring money for parking. Alternatively, take the train to Perth Station or Perth Underground. Those travelling by bus will want to get off at Perth City Station or Barrack Street Perth Station. 

 

10. Perth Zoo

11. The Bell Tower

The tradition continues today, and it’s one of the best places to go on the weekend in Perth. It’s the ultimate Western Australia market experience whether you’re a Perth local or a tourist visiting for the first time. Along the northern coast, 25 minutes away from Perth, is Hillarys Boat Harbour, a stunning marina where you’ll find plenty of shops, restaurants, and family-friendly beaches, such as Sorrento Beach and Marmion Beach, to explore. Here, you’ll also find the Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA), which is a great place to stop if you're travelling as a family. Spend a few hours shopping along the boardwalk and enjoying the view, stop at Dôme Café for a bite to eat, or even catch a ferry to Rottnest Island here. It’s also a great place to go jet skiing and fishing, among many other activities in the area. You can also go on a whale-watching cruise in the winter. How to get there: It’s only 20 minutes by car or taxi to get to Hillarys Boat Harbour via Mitchell Freeway or State Route 2. Those travelling by public transit can get off the bus at West Coast Drive Before St Helier Drive. 

 

15. Scitech

Scitech is one of the best family-friendly attractions in all of Perth, located in West Perth. With hands-on, interactive exhibits and a planetarium, this is an ideal place to bring the kids so they can explore, learn, and escape the heat or a rainy day in the city. Scitech’s Planetarium is a mega 180-degree dome with 6.1 surround sound and digital projection, making it one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Before you go, you’ll want to check when the Planetarium shows are so you don’t miss the chance to experience this for yourself. Caversham Wildlife Park is a family-run attraction located in Whiteman Park, Swan Valley. First opened in 1988, this park started as a small farm and has grown into a popular destination showcasing over 200 species of animals, including many native to Western Australia. People visit from all over the world to see the farm show, feed kangaroos, and meet the koalas. It’s one of the most hands-on wildlife attractions you’ll find in Perth and perfect for a half-day trip. Bring a camera to capture the memories and close wildlife encounters. Head out to Caversham Wildlife Park early to ensure you don’t run into too many crowds.

Penguin Island is home to the largest colony of fairy penguins (also known as little penguins) in Western Australia and is located off the coast of Rockingham. Only 45 minutes from Perth, this destination rivals Rottnest Island, offering travellers the chance to snorkel, kayak, and even spot dolphins, sea lions, pelicans, and other marine life along the coast. Even if you aren’t keen on swimming or getting in the ocean, the island’s walking trails and picnic spots make it a great destination for a day trip. Taking a Penguin Island Cruise from Perth is one of the best ways to see the wildlife up close, including wild dolphins playing and penguins feeding. The island is not open to the public during the winter (mid-June to late September), so if you’re interested in visiting this destination, The best time to visit Perth is during the spring, summer, or autumn. The Aquarium of Western Australia is located in Hillarys Boat Harbour and showcases the vivid marine life that lines the coastline. Located in Perth CBD, Yagan Square is a modern hub with restaurants, art, and outdoor seating situated between the train station and Horseshoe Bridge. It’s an ideal spot for foodies and those wanting to explore more of Perth CBD and its offerings. While you’re here, spend some time looking at the public art displays or viewing some of the gardens. Perth Digital Tower is also in Yagan Square, which is one of the most stunning structures in the area. With a market hall and plenty of public space, it’s a destination you could easily spend an hour or two exploring. To see it in all its vibrancy, come during the evening and stop by Street Eats Eatery or Karla for some delicious food and drinks.  

How to get there: Getting to Yagan Square is easy as it is in Perth CBD. If you take the train, get off at Perth Underground or Perth main station. If you take the bus, arrive at Perth City Station. It’s only a short walk over to Yagan Square. 

 

20. Lake Monger

Just outside of Perth CBD is Lake Monger, a tranquil destination that has paved walking and cycling trails and numerous native wildlife to view. This is one of the best spots in Perth to visit for a quiet, relaxing day while still not venturing too far from some of the city’s top attractions. Here, you’ll get to walk, cycle, or jog around the lake, sit and enjoy some of the recreation areas in the park, or even stop for a quick snack at a food truck on the property. There are BBQ stations to use and public toilets onsite, too. For a great view of the area, stop by Lake Monger North Lookout and snap a few pictures. This is great for a short hour visit in the early morning or afternoon if you want to barbecue. It’s also a fantastic spot for birdwatching, specifically for black swans, so bring along a pair of binoculars and some snacks, and enjoy! 

How to get there: It’s only a six-minute drive from Perth CBD to Lake Monger via State Route 72. There’s free parking available. For those travelling by public transit, take the bus to either the various Harborne St bus stops or Powis St Before Harborne St for the most direct route.
