Your international travel checklist

Ensure your passport is valid

Seems straightforward, however it's not as simple as it sounds. All guests require a passport for international travel, regardless of your destination. However, you must also check your passport is valid for at least six months, as some countries require passports to be valid for a certain length of time beyond your visit. If you have not already applied for your passport, arrange this well in advance of your departure date, you don't want to be left behind on your family holiday.

You also must ensure that your passport is in good condition. If your Australian passport has some damage visit the Australian Passport Office’s website for more information about whether it can still be used.  Note: normal wear and tear should not be a problem, but more serious damage can stop you from travelling. If you are travelling on a foreign passport, please contact your local consular office for guidance.

Virgin Australia ground crew will require you to show all relevant travel documents at check-in. Guests are solely responsible for obtaining all travel documents and for complying with all laws, regulations, orders and travel requirements of countries to be flown from, into or over. The airline may refuse to carry you if we reasonably believe you will be refused entry to the destination country. For general information on passports and visas please visit your countries Foreign Affairs or State Department website.

Apply for the required visa

A visa is permission for a non-citizen to travel to a particular country. Visas are obtained from the issuing authority in your country, usually an embassy. Visas information and requirements for Australia can be found at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website.

We know a lot, but we don't know everything. To find out if you need a visa for travel to a particular country, visit the IATA Travel Centre.

Check your destination's travel and entry requirements

Many of the destinations we service have their own rules and regulations for entry. To find out more about the entry requirements for the destinations that we fly to, visit the travel and entry requirements page.

We recommend checking the latest travel info and advice before you fly. You can find out what you need to know from the Australian Government on the Department of Home AffairsDepartment of Health and Smartraveller websites.

Please note: these are guidelines only and your individual requirements for international travel may vary. Virgin Australia recommends you contact the relevant government agency for your destination. Visa requirements are subject to change without notice.

Provide evidence of onward or return travel

Most countries require visitors to have proof of onward or return travel arrangements. Sorry, you can't stay on holiday forever! Your itinerary may serve this purpose, and all visitors must carry proof of onward/return travel arrangements with them. Failure to do so may result in refusal of carriage and loss of fare. We recommend printing your itinerary prior to arriving at check-in. Guests should also ensure they have the right of re-entry to their return destination.
