Baggage allowances based on fare type

If you are travelling on our Domestic and International Short Haul network, you will be entitled to the below checked baggage allowance.

Lite fare

Non-members & Red Velocity Frequent Flyers: Not included

Silver, Gold & Platinum: Not included 

Choice, Flex & Economy Reward

Non-members & Red Velocity Frequent Flyers: 1 x 23kg

Silver & Gold: 2 x 23kg 

Platinum: 3 x 23kg

Business and Business Rewards

Non-members & Red Velocity Frequent Flyers: 2 x 32kg

Silver & Gold: 2 x 32kg 

Platinum: 3 x 32kg

Velocity Frequent Flyer members:

  • Velocity complimentary baggage allowance is based on status at time of travel, not time of booking.
  • Additional baggage allowances for Velocity Silver, Gold and Platinum members varies depending on the operating carrier, for Virgin Australia codeshare bookings please refer to non-member allowances.
  • Baggage allowances for Reward Seat fares with Velocity airline partners will be based on the operating carrier's baggage allowances as found on their website and as per your class of travel. Refer to your Velocity status page for more information on further benefits.

Infants and children

Infants and children are entitled to infant and child items as checked baggage, free of charge, as listed below. For an overview on your travel requirements and options when travelling with infants or children, please visit our specific travel for children.

Domestic flights

Up to two additional bags may be purchased online or via the Guest Contact Centre prior to check in.

If you need to purchase more than two additional bags, this can be requested at the airport, but as this is subject to availability, there is no guarantee that these additional bags will be accepted.

International flights

These baggage fees only apply when travelling on Virgin Australia-operated flights. When travelling on a flight operated by a partner airline, please visit "Travelling with airline partners" which details your baggage allowance and excess baggage fees.

International baggage fees

If you change your mind and choose to cancel your flight, fees will not be refunded unless you are entitled to a refund under the Australian Consumer Law.

 

Where to purchase additional baggage?

Online

If you’d like to purchase additional baggage to an existing booking, go to Manage your Booking.

Guest Contact Centre

Please contact the Virgin Australia Guest Contact Centre on 13 67 89 if you are calling from within Australia. View contact numbers outside of Australia.

At the airport

Additional baggage can be selected and purchased via self-service Kiosks or via an Agent at the Check-In counter. Higher baggage rates will apply at the airport. 

Pre-purchased baggage may only be purchased if you are travelling on a Virgin Australia ticketed and operated flight. For tickets or connecting flights operated by other airlines additional baggage may only be purchased at the airport on the day of departure.

Overweight baggage fees

If you're travelling Economy with a little extra weight, fees will apply at the airport to any piece over 23kg up to 32kg. For items that are over 32kg, please refer to our Cargo services.

Fees are charged at the airport on the day of departure for each additional piece, per one way journey (includes formal connecting flights) as listed below.

Domestic

An overweight baggage fee of $60 will apply to each piece of baggage weighing over 23kg (maximum 32kg).

All other international short haul

These rates only apply to guests on Virgin Australia-operated flights. For guests travelling on one of our partner airlines please visit this page which details your baggage allowance and excess baggage rates.

Oversized baggage

Oversized baggage such as:

  • wheelchairs
  • sporting equipment
  • bikes
  • surfboards, etc. 

can be checked in, provided each item does not exceed their baggage weight allowance; otherwise they will be charged with an overweight baggage fee.

Purchase extra bags

For Economy fares and purchased checked baggage, items over 23kg may incur overweight baggage fees. IF you need to add bags you can Manage Booking.

Meet size requirements

Make sure your bags meet our checked bag maximum total linear dimension (length+width+height) = 140cm (55in) calculated by adding together the width, height and depth of the piece of baggage.

DON'T

Bring multiple items as one piece

Multiple items held together will not be accepted as a single piece of baggage. Additional baggage fees may apply.

Exceed 32kg

No single item may exceed 32kg. See Cargo services for heavier items.

Leave your bags unaccompanied

Checked baggage that is not travelling with a passenger will not be accepted. Unaccompanied baggage must be sent as cargo.
