The safety of our guests, team members, contractors and visitors is our highest priority. As a result, we actively and systematically manage safety-related risks across our business, and strive for continuous improvement in safety practices.

Safety and Operational Risk Review Committee
The Virgin Australia Board has always recognised the importance of, and had ultimate responsibility for, safety and operational risk oversight and management. To continuously improve its performance, the Board established a Safety and Operational Risk Review Committee as an efficient mechanism for focusing attention on this area.
The Safety and Operational Risk Review Committee provides effective oversight of operational safety, health and security risks of Virgin Australia. The Committee also ensures the focus of Virgin Australia is to maintain best practice in operational safety management, including compliance with legal and regulatory obligations and internal systems of control.

Safety Management System
Virgin Australia manages safety through proactive and systematic identification of risk. We control and reduce operational safety risk through our Safety Management System (SMS). The SMS continually monitors our operations to ensure they exceed Civil Aviation Safety Authority standards and international safety regulators.
Virgin Australia is audited every two years against a global standard, by an accredited IATA Operations Safety Audit (IOSA) Audit Organisation.
Workplace Health and Safety
Health and safety performance is managed and reported across a range of occupational health and safety indicators in various areas of Virgin Australia. Targets are set on an annual basis and regularly monitored at management and executive level.
Virgin Australia has a strong commitment to becoming a more sustainable business and working towards our vision of sustainability leadership within the aviation industry. Since 2013 Virgin Australia has published an annual Sustainability Report under the Global Reporting Initiative and this report includes a number of health and safety performance metrics.
In 2015 Virgin Australia achieved external certification to Australian/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS) 4801 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.
The scope of the certification is the strategic management of the Virgin Australia Group Workplace Health and Safety Management System and this achievement is indicative of the ongoing commitment Virgin Australia makes to the health and safety of its team members.
Security
Our management of security risks and potential threats is underpinned by our Transport Security Program, which is formally reviewed every five years and subject to external and internal audits. We work with government agencies, regulators and airport operators in Australia and overseas to ensure we comply with all regulations, and produce the securest operations possible.
